Cock up or conspiracy?

Emma Stone says she was holding her card so if it was in the envelope it was a duplicate, why would you do that?????

My favourite meme is the one that blames Putin.....

Have been trying to find a thread.

I keep watching the clips and laughing, unkind I know.

It s just so awful - how did they get so far into the speeches - no ear piece for Beatty? No one on hand to leap on stage?

OnHold Mon 27-Feb-17 07:05:07

Oh dear. It's all went a bit wrong.grin

Dolly80 Mon 27-Feb-17 07:07:46

I've just read about what happened, not seen it yet. There's close ups on Twitter that the front of the envelope said Actress in a Leading Role

Pre-Oscars I read a BBC article about the people from PWC who calculate the results. From memory, I'm sure there are two boxes of winner envelopes - either side of the stage - so it's plausible the unused leading actress one was used, which would have said La La Land on it.

pigeondujour Mon 27-Feb-17 07:10:16

I just can't bring myself to believe in the social media era that that was a simple mistake. Especially given how much-discussed which of the two films deserved the award more had been leading up to the ceremony.

Northernlurker Mon 27-Feb-17 07:10:27

I really struggle to believe in the wrong envelope thing.

FixItUpChappie Mon 27-Feb-17 07:13:32

-Warren was looking confused, Faye looked at the card and called out La La Land

-the Academy confirmed there are two of each card, so Emma had one and the presenters mistakenly had the other

-someone ran onto stage with the right card after the fact

It was handled so badly - they should have led everyone off and had a designated person come out and explain not leave a live chaotic scene on stage where oscars are taken out of people's hands. I feel bad for all involved including Dunaway and Beatty - seemed like a straight forward mistake on their part. Someone gave them the wrong envelope - one did a double-take while the other didn't read it fully in the glare of the spotlight.

Plunkette Mon 27-Feb-17 07:16:49

Well I imagine someone will have been sacked this evening.

It's hard to imagine that the envelopes weren't double and trip checked so the process has fallen down somewhere.

However, as embarrassing as it no doubt is for the organisers, and as unfortunate as it no doubt was for the teams from
both la la Land and Moonlight - it's only the Oscars. Worse things happen in real life every day.

This is doing the rounds on social media

I still don't understand why there aren't earpieces etc for when things go wrong. The article I mentioned said the 2 people from PWC memorise all the answers. So, if there's a mess up that means they have to go and physically find people to tell them? Seems a bit of an odd system in 2017!

decemberdaze Mon 27-Feb-17 07:30:38

This item was on the 7am news on Radio 4 this morning. The shocker for me is why anyone should consider it news. confused

Plunkette Mon 27-Feb-17 07:34:43

Well to be fair december there were around 35 million people watching it. It's not unreasonable to report on the ceremony.

hollyisalovelyname Mon 27-Feb-17 07:42:23

Warren Beatty is taking the flack but it was Faye Dunaway who read it out.

I get the two boxes of envelopes thing but I just don't get why the envelope said Lalaland.
Awful for the Moonlight team

Imi22sleeping Mon 27-Feb-17 07:44:18

There is a person on either side of the stage with a briefcase with the card so there are two cards so it doesnt matter what side of the stage the presenter comes on from.the other card is then destroyed however the card warren betty was given says on the front actress in a leading role so wasnt destroyed when he opened it you can see his face like ehh that says emma stone and he pauses for sometime. You see the guy with the two cards behind him later. How moritfing

backaftera2yearbreak Mon 27-Feb-17 07:45:34

Did you see the part the brought a tour in off the bus m.youtube.com/watch?v=0hUNB81kIKE

Northernlurker Mon 27-Feb-17 07:46:12

I'm liking the theory Trump arranged it so that any political statements would be overshadowed......

Trainspotting1984 Mon 27-Feb-17 08:07:39

Mortifying such a great speech from la la lands too

noeuf Mon 27-Feb-17 08:19:10

That coach trip is awful. Poor bastards, it's just a bit bordering on taking the piss.

BakeOffBiscuits Mon 27-Feb-17 08:29:44

bagel the card didn't say LaLa Land, it said Emma Stone, the actress in LaLaLand. That's why Warren. Beaty looked confused then handed the card to Faye Dunnaway (thus passing the buck).
Why didn't one of them say "hold on a minute, that doesn't seem right, can someone just check this?
I feel most sorry for Moonlight people

Gingernaut Mon 27-Feb-17 08:33:15

There are two sets of envelopes either side of the stage.

As the award givers walk up onto the stage, they are handed the envelope for the category they are about to announce and present.

The accountant from Price, Waterhouse Cooper on the other side of the stage, should promptly destroy or put aside the corresponding envelope.

So it does not matter which side of the stage the announcers arrive on, there is an envelope waiting for them.

When they announced Best Actress, the corresponding envelope wasn't destroyed/put aside and it was this duplicate envelope that was then handed to Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway instead of the Best Film envelope.

Trainspotting1984 Mon 27-Feb-17 08:43:31

Accountant from PWC 😂 What a farce. Why would you need an accountant to monitor envelopes?

BakeOffBiscuits Mon 27-Feb-17 08:46:56

PWH are the only people who know the results- they must be the people who overlook all the voting and make sure it's all above board.

londonpia Mon 27-Feb-17 08:56:22

So Warren Beatty had the envelope for 'Best Actress', but that didn't register. He should have had the envelope for 'Best Picture'. So when he opened it and saw 'Emma Stone-Lala Land' he just read out 'Lala Land'.

NotJanine Mon 27-Feb-17 09:01:31

No, he didn't read it at all! I've read severl times this morning that he read it out - there's footage showing what happened, why are people still saying he read it out?!

GwenStaceyRocks Mon 27-Feb-17 09:03:24

Warren Beatty did register it was odd. Hence he didn't read it out and passed it to Faye. She didn't notice it was odd and read out the name of the film (just ignoring the Emma Stone part).
