The Royals jumping ship...

A virus pandemic breaks out in the UK. Everyone is essentially on house arrest bar a few essential occasions. Businesses and workers facing going bust. People dying every day. Hospitals overwhelmed. Surely this would be a great moment for a morale boosting message from our beloved royals, who we pay to keep in the lap of luxury? Oh wait, a little recorded message has been deemed a health risk to the Queen (allegedly).

Oh well, they can always volunteer Buckingham Palace as a makeshift hospital or hub for supplies, etc, as I'm sure they want to do what they can for their beloved citizens, especially now theyve legged it out of London. Oh wait.

Seriously what are these people for and why do we pay for them again?

Charles, who is 71, has CV - that couldn't be hushed up

We don't know if the Queen, at 93, is unwell, with CV or anything else

But William should be able to stand in for them both and issue a message

I'm not picking on the queen specifically. For what it's worth, I'm no royalist but can objectively see she has worked hard and fulfilled her duties over the years.

But the others? All the younger royals who want their weddings paid for? For the entire institution to do nothing, not even a video message or offer of financial help/use of one of their stately homes?

Apparently Buckingham Palace is holding back on a televised message from the Queen because they feel it would better a little longer into the lock-down. They don't want to draw attention away from the PM and ministers, and scientists, etc.

The Queen can't be seen to be stepping on government toes!

I don't know what plans there are for Buckingham Palace in this crisis. Do you?

As I understand it, the Queen at 93 would be in a high risk category, so certainly shouldn't be interacting with the BBC or sound recordists etc. Do you want her to set a bad example?

You don't sound as if your morale would be boosted by a message from the Queen, so why don't you go and volunteer somewhere to make yourself feel better about yourself?

Wolfgirrl · 25/03/2020 14:54

I'm not saying she should be offering medical advice etc. Just a short message to boost morale etc.

Or even better offering actual help and resources, for which they are not lacking.

The country is full of people willing to help others at their own effort/expense despite having little themselves. The royals are so wealthy and privileged yet appear to do the bare minimum at the moment aka nothing.

William released a video in support of the The National Emergencies Trust last week.

Why do you have expectations of an institution you don't respect or even pay any attention to, OP? In other words, what's it to you?

Because I am forced to accept them as head of state and pay taxes towards them. It isnt an opt out thing. Therefore I feel entitled to comment.

What is it with MN and saying 'oh do'? Confused literally never heard it anywhere else.

What old chestnut? The royals not really helping in a global virus pandemic?

I agree.

@Sunseed whatever you might think, the Queen is a highly intelligent, well-informed woman and she's lived a helluva lot longer than you and I in good times and bad. As Head of State, she will be working with her advisers to pick her time, to address the people of this country, and ensure maximum effect. Timing is everything in life.

It doesn't sound like you're going to cling onto whatever words of wisdom she will say anyway, I'll set the timer when you and others will be back on here moaning what does she know anyway, so this is yet another example in the long line of moany divisive threads by negative people contributing towards people's already low psychological mood.

I don’t really understand the obsession with offering up clearly unsuitable buildings to be used as makeshift hospitals.

The government has secured the use of a major empty space (the Excel Centre) and numerous private hospitals in the rest of the UK. These are way more suitable than old cluttered stately homes (or shitty draughty old prisons in the case of my local fb suggestions)

The Queen issued a message literally 6 days ago rallying the troops; I’m sure she’ll be doing another one soon.

Equally, what are you doing?

Ask yourself not what can my country do for me, but what can I do for my country

I'm hoping that after all of this is over this country finally sees them for the total non-entities they really are.

Nothing any of them can say would be helpful because none of them are trained scientists, medics or politicians. The Queen didn't even have a proper education ffs.

@daisychain01

I have given my own supplies to people in need, offered to deliver food and home cooked meals to the homes of anyone that is sick/isolating. I would like to do more but I am high risk and chronically ill, plus not a millionaire with numerous stately homes.

It's a sign of a poor argument when people turn it back at you rather than answer the question.

But why go for the Queen? She has always rolled her sleeves up and gotten stuck in - from joining the WAC in WW2 right up to visiting victims of Grenfell and the Manchester attacks. She’s not a shirker.

She can’t exactly grab an IV bag and attend to patients; she’s already issued a “we will prevail!” Statement, (including glowing praise of the NHS staff) what more exactly do you expect her to do?

The Queen didn't even have a proper education ffs.

What, apart from her speaking French as if it were her own language, her encyclopaedic knowledge of current affairs, her understanding of politics, her knowledge of the animal kingdom.

Riiiiiight.....
