Husband's irritating habits whilst WFH!

Just looking for a MN opinion on this to see if I'm being picky. Semi light-hearted and I know there are far worse things to get irritated about but you know how everything gets magnified times a million when you're in lockdown together for the 67 millionth day!

Husband makes a coffee around 4/5 times a day. Takes coffee out of cupboard, makes coffee, puts it back in cupboard (and this is the key bit) leaving said cupboard door wide open right opposite my line of vision from where I'm working. Buggers off back to his work space where he can't see wide open cupboard door. Would you:-

a) sigh heavily, stomp over and slam said cupboard door shut loud enough so that he can hear you're annoyed
b) get up and calmly close cupboard then ask him nicely the next time he's in the kitchen not to forget to close it
c) just close the damn thing yourself and not say anything
d) LTB

Have tried approaches a and b and he gets pissed off with me for being 'passive aggressive' !!

E. Ask him to close it, every time.

He gets pissed at you being passive aggressive but still hasn't learned to close the damned thing himself?! he's a thoughtless bugger. I'd keep slamming it to wind him up

I would ask him to close it because open cabinet doors can be dangerous if run into and because he's a grown man who should be able to remember to close the bloody thing.

Tell him to close it because he's being annoying. Then if he carried on go and get him every time and point it out and tell him to close it. He'll start closing it. Or D.

So he is passively agressively continuing to leave the cupboard door open in response? LTB.

F - put a note on the coffee jar saying “Shut the fucking cupboard door!”

Report
CandleNoBra · 18/05/2020 14:48

In my house I’d yell “cupboard!” and he’d know to come back and close it. But I live in a house of serial door-left-openers so it’s just any normal day that you hear somebody yelling “door!” or similar.

Bugs the living crap out of me. Leave it like you found it FFS!

If the cupboard is in your eyeline then everytime you see him making coffee, call through to him to close the cupboard door....guaranteed he will get tired of it before you do.

Glue the cabinet door shut. Say nothing. Have popcorn at the ready.

Oh I have an option E. go to wherever he is working, open something or move something, hear him tell you to move it back, just leave the room. Or option F pretend you injured yourself on the open door.

Haha I love the post-it note idea. He just said to me 'I'll do my best to remember but I'll probably still forget sometimes.' IT'S NOT FUCKING DIFFICULT, FFS!

If you wanted to show what passive aggressive really meant you could just remove the cupboard door completely and hide it 😁

This may be too sensible but why not leave the coffee on the counter next to the kettle at the beginning of the day and put it away in the cupboard at the end of the day after the last cup?

Hide the coffee Grin

It’s funny how you don’t know much about your OH’s work habits until you end up working from home together for such a long period. My partner is a ‘commenter’, he loudly says comments about emails he’s received or reports he’s reading ‘oh come off it what does that even mean??’ ‘15% reduction? You’d be lucky!!’. He doesn’t do this when he’s reading normal books/papers so I had no idea. He doesn’t even know he’s doing it until I mention it. Drives me mad!!

Take the coffee out of the jar and put gravy granules in there instead.

Haha I feel your pain. My husband is the king of leaving cupboard doors open! Also the light switch to the downstairs loo is outside the door and he just cannot ever seem to remember to switch it off. These things drive me crazy and so I mention it every single time in the hope it'll sink in eventually. I don't go in for sighing and stomping myself Smile

Hide the coffee.

Take the cupboard door off.

If you can see him - yell 'shut the bloody cupboard door' every time he goes to make coffee.

Mine is currently leaving a trail of crockery around the house whilst offering to help the children with English.

Brefugee · 18/05/2020 15:08

get him to come back every time.

Why can't you leave the coffee jar out on the side so he doesn't need to open the cupboard

Report
Sparklfairy · 18/05/2020 15:12

This is my most annoying habit (and I live alone so the only person it drives up the wall is me!)

I saw a documentary once where a teen in the middle of his A Levels made a cuppa at home, left the cupboard open, bent down and as he stood up smashed his head on the corner of the cupboard door. Had total amnesia and the documentary covered his very slow recovery. Terrified me!

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 18/05/2020 15:13

Oh the other thing is he wears noise-cancelling headphones so he can't hear me yelling at him to close it!

@YorkshirePud1 he does the light switch thing in the downstairs loo too - it's not even dark enough to need a bloody light on but he still puts it on and leaves it on!

And don't get me started on him needing to give me a summary of every conference call....aaarrghhh!!!!
