AIBU?

To think that nobody cooks breakfast every day?

It's kind of in my "ain't nobody got time for that" category but equally I wish I had the energy to cook breakfast every day

My kids are rubbish with continental breakfast (not big fans of cereal, toast, etc. Unless it's just chocolate covered cereal bars) but will wolf down eggs, bacon, sausage, beans and hash browns if given the opportunity.

AIBU to refuse to get up early and cook them the food they actually like? If you do make the effort do you think it benefits you and your family?
Weekend treat or daily fare?

Tia

It's not really healthy to eat that every day though. Could you make poached or dippy eggs instead? Quicker and healthier

Surely their is a middle ground?

Bacon barm, scrambled egg etc only take minutes to cook.

if this counts - I cook 2 boiled eggs & toast for DS1 (he's 9) every morning. he likes cereal well enough but really loves eggs. DS2 (7) has just toast with PB. not sure I'd be up for the commitment of a full english every morning though.

I make eggs every morning. Never been a fan of cereal or bread-based food for breakfast, plus it leaves me starving by ten o'clock.

I don't cook every day but I also don't eat cereal etc. I don't usually go for the full english either, generally omelette or scrambled egg with bacon or sausage.
I do make breakfast wraps and freeze to take to work on early shifts as well (and sometimes when I can't be bothered at home)

What about just eggs on toast? DS loves a fried egg sandwich - the egg fries as the bread is toasted so it really doesn't take much more time than just toast.

Scrambled egg on toast takes the same time as just doing the toast, really.

I find it quite frustrating when people say scrambled/ poached eggs / bacon take no time to cook. Firstly, they take far more then a bowl of cereal or porridge, and secondly the clearing up afterwards is far more significant.

FWIW OP a grilled cooked breakfast is pretty healthy. I used to work in a b&b and often the cooked items were cooked the night before and reheated which saves lots of time

My dc like dippy eggs for breakfast, sometimes the oldest has a bacon sandwich. Not every day though as they will have cereal. I take breakfast orders the night before which makes it easy and washing up is done whilst they get themselves dressed.

Cleaning one pan takes no time! Frying a slice of bacon or poaching an egg takes no longer than making porridge

Cleaning a pan that’s made scrambled eggs certainly does. Porridge just goes in the microwave and doesn’t make any mess

Fried eggs take minutes. Same with beans or mushrooms.

DS1 has bacon sarnies every morning. We cook the whole pack, then he eats it over 3 days, just reheating it in the microwave.

What is too complicated to do daily is a full English, as the timings don't allow you to mindlessly do other morning stuff, but that would be excessive, anyhow.

Our pan just goes straight in the dishwasher so it depends what your 'washing up' entails.

I can make eggs in the 2 mins it takes for the bread to toast - it doesn’t take any extra time. And DS loves eggs.

My last scrambled egg pan went through the dishwasher 3 times 🤣

Oh have you thought about slow cooker breakfasts? You can get them prepped the night before so they'll be ready in the morning without any extra faffing around.

I make pancakes every morning as DD eats them! She is too skinny by half so I make what I know she'll eat. My niece and nephew have eggs and bacon in the morning I believe. Either scramble, fry or dippy.

you can do scrambled eggs in the microwave too

I usually cook scrambled eggs in the microwave or in a non-stick frying pan so clean up is easy

Report
PickAChew · 05/12/2018 11:53

The key with eggs, btw, is to keep a pan only for eggs and just wipe it clean or wash very gently.

add the egg, a tiny bit of milk, salt and pepper to a microwave safe bowl, use a fork to scramble it

Please be careful with how much bacon you’re giving your DCs (and yourselves!) The evidence on the harmful affect of the nitrates in bacon is actually scary. Have a read of this

I know this is not the point of the thread and I’m sure it’ll get dismissed by most people but please at least read the article and think about it. Especially if you or your family are eating bacon every day!

You can do breakfast overnight in a slow cooker.

You don't need to do the full fry up, beans on toast with a toaster and beans in the microwave takes about 3 mins.

Eggs 'poached' in a ramekin in the microwave are quick and easy, serve on toast or dip toast in, then it's just one ramekin more than a bowl of cereal for cleaning.

If you have a toastie sandwich maker in the back of a cupboard then you can break an egg on to the bread - push the bread into the mold a bit.

An egg casserole is a good option, eggs with a combination of any veg the kids like, sausage, bacon, grated potatoes, and cheese baked in the oven for 35-40 mins, keeps in the fridge for 4 days and can be heated in the microwave in the morning and serve it with a slice of toast.
Job done 👍🏻

There’s loads of recipes online.

Yep microwave or frying pan scrambled eggs take 2 minutes and another 2 to clean the pan. No trouble at all. That said, my kids get toast or weetabix most days and eggs at the weekend.
