To think that nobody cooks breakfast every day?

bumblebee39 · 05/12/2018 11:36

It's kind of in my "ain't nobody got time for that" category but equally I wish I had the energy to cook breakfast every day

My kids are rubbish with continental breakfast (not big fans of cereal, toast, etc. Unless it's just chocolate covered cereal bars) but will wolf down eggs, bacon, sausage, beans and hash browns if given the opportunity.

AIBU to refuse to get up early and cook them the food they actually like? If you do make the effort do you think it benefits you and your family?
Weekend treat or daily fare?

Tia

I have an egg steamer on a timer.

Set it up the night before. Begins cooking in time that the eggs are the right temp when I get to them to put on toast. I'm too groggy to cook first thing, and the automation means I don't have to get up 30m earlier to be 'cook ready'.

I await your applause.

PickAChew · 05/12/2018 11:57

I'd rather DS1 didn't eat bacon every day but he's autistic and it's all he'll accept for breakfast.

LifesABeachCoaster · 05/12/2018 11:58

I wish I had a cooked breakfast every day waiting for me. Its so unhealthy though. Unless you grill and boil everything I suppose.

We enjoy a fry up but only have it on the odd saturday. I find it makes me feel groggy for hours after.

PinkHeart5914 · 05/12/2018 11:58

There is a middle ground though.

I don’t do a cooked breakfast everyday (cooked as in bacon, sausages etc) but beans on toast or fried egg on toast takes minutes so hardly need to get up much earlier to do that.

Mine are only little still but they eat beans/egg on toast Better than they do cereal or porridge so I do them what they prefer to eat. Then a full English or pancakes are cooked at weekends when me and dh have more time

bobstersmum · 05/12/2018 11:59

Cook a batch of sausage and bacon and quickly reheat in the morning? I've done this for dh.

Cleo18 · 05/12/2018 12:00

I do porridge or eggs every day. Have never had cereal in the house, (except granola which we sometimes have with yoghurt and fruit as a dessert).

Would they eat a cheese and ham toastie (quick if you pre-prep)? Or baked beans on toast - super quick and easy? (Add a side of chopped tomatoes) Or savoury pancakes as suggested above,

Better to feed the kids good stuff that they like - it pays off in the long run

whatwouldyoubelikeat28 · 05/12/2018 12:02

I do, although it's usually fried up veg - any combination of mushrooms, leeks, broccoli, zucchini, cauliflower, pumpkin even - all of them!

SleepySofa · 05/12/2018 12:02

DP does scrambled eggs every morning - just for himself as DS won't eat eggs any more and I can't face that first thing. It only takes him 5 minutes.

Llanali · 05/12/2018 12:05

We do either porridge- proper not ready brek etc- with fruit and honey, or scrambled eggs/baked beans on toast.

Sometimes pancakes with banana and honey, and they have peanut butter and apple slices whilst it cooks.

I don’t think sugary cereals, or even non sugar ones are a filling start to the day. If they opt for just toast they need to have a nut butter on it too for protein.

pasturesgreen · 05/12/2018 12:05

YANBU, OP.
Also, a full English every morning seems like a sure fire way to heart disease.

Sitranced · 05/12/2018 12:06

You're doing scrambled eggs wrong if you need to clean the pan 3 times to get it clean. Pan needs to be red hot before eggs go in with the butter and the pan will be left clean when you dishup. Just needs a quick swill with dishsoap to use again.

DavetheCat2001 · 05/12/2018 12:07

Is it just me that hates the expression 'dippy eggs'?

JeanMichelBisquiat · 05/12/2018 12:07

We cook it every day.

No-sugar waffles or muffins made with coconut milk and a fair bit of almond flour along with normal flour, home-made no too sweet nutella on top.

Sausages as well at the weekend.

Would love to do eggs etc, but kids have lots of allergies so we can't - that's as proteiny as we can get it (used to do sausages every day, but it was very expensive!).

JeanMichelBisquiat · 05/12/2018 12:08

PS loving the idea that eating meat and eggs is much more likely to give you heart disease than sugary cereal or toast with jam on....

Caprisunorange · 05/12/2018 12:08

Ready brek is Porridge. It’s just more finely milled than rolled oats

Gromance02 · 05/12/2018 12:11

Having a cooked breakfast every day is so unhealthy. Even once a week would be pushing it.

kaitlinktm · 05/12/2018 12:12

@Iruka
I do make breakfast wraps and freeze to take to work on early shifts as well (and sometimes when I can't be bothered at home)

I want to know more about these ^^ please tell me how you do them.

Also to pp - what are dippy eggs? Are they the same as boiled eggs or something different?

I think my SW crustless quiche is the same as a pp's egg casserole. I put any sort of veg - peppers, onions etc, or mushroom and bacon (have to precook those though) in a quiche dish I have sprayed with oil. Then I beat 3 eggs and mix them with a tub of cottage cheese (or I think you can use quark), pour the mixture over the top and bake for about half an hour. I can then put it in the fridge for a few days and have a slice when I like - either cold or heated up in the microwave.

dustarr73 · 05/12/2018 12:13

Eggy bread is your friend.2 minutes and its done.

SauvingnonBlanketyBlanc · 05/12/2018 12:15

I make ds 4 scrambled eggs on microwave most mornings, takes literally a minute

RayRayBidet · 05/12/2018 12:15

I was wondering what a dippy egg was. Is it a boiled egg?

bumblebee39 · 05/12/2018 12:15

I scramble eggs in the microwave or a frying pan so maybe they are a good compromise.
They don't really eat toast at all, with toppings or filled with moulten cheese which I do not understand
But they will eat grilled tomatoes, mushrooms and omelette so might be a plan to try some mushroom and tomato breakfast egg muffins or something for on the go and bacon and eggs for a quick breakfast with reheated grilled bacon. I like coddled eggs or poached as find the oil too greasy in the morning from fried eggs anyway.
They do love sausages so might grill up some of them and reheat with a side of scrambled eggs.
I think I'm thinking its "all or nothing" when really there is a compromise.

I used to love hot toast with marmite and sliced hard boiled eggs (cold ones premade) and a little salt and hot sauce for breakfast. That used to fill me up much better than just toast would.
I do think eggs are the food of the gods whatever way they are cooked!

I think the microwave may be the answer. Mine broke so it definitely needs replacing!

DD is always hungry so I thought it might help her to have a filling breakfast, then she might not eat so much after school and have space for her dinner.

A slow cooker cooked breakfast sounds rather marvellous must make better use of mine!
& that breakfast bake looks marvellous but think it might be more up my street than DCs

I know a heartier breakfast would do us all good but don't think I could face doing a full fry up so thanks for reminding me about the middle ground!

I do porridge or eggs with several fresh fruits every day in the week, then a grilled low fat cooked breakfast at weekends. Scrambled eggs in a bowl in the microwave are no problem in the dishwasher.

DH was told at cardiac rehab that cereals have practically no nutritional value - although oats are good at reducing cholesterol.

pickingdaisies · 05/12/2018 12:16

Get your washing up bowl full of hot water before you start cooking the scrambled eggs; toast on, make eggs and/or heat beans, serve up, dirty pans into hot water. I thank you.

BarbaraofSevillle · 05/12/2018 12:17

I have an omelette several times a week, but never wash the omelette pan, unless something sticks, which it rarely does because you should never wash an omelette pan anyway. But just leave any washing up until later if you don't have time.

Sometimes I take sandwiches, maybe egg mayo, to eat a bit later on. Boil the eggs the night before, and make the sandwiches in the morning.

I also make a home made McDonalds breakfast wrap in about 5 minutes, which is a good portable breakfast - put a potato waffle in the toaster, microwave a quorn sausage patty, make a 1 egg omelette, put the waffle in for a second go, stick a wrap in the microwave for 30 s on top of the sausage patty, by this time the waffle and the omelette are ready, and you can assemble with a splash of brown sauce, wrap in foil and are good to go. Sounds complicated, but Iv'e got into a routine and can do it virtually in my sleep.

Iruka · 05/12/2018 12:17

@kaitlinktm its just scrambled eggs in a tortilla wrap with whatever else I think to add. Sometimes its a bit of sausage and blackpudding, last week I did cheese and chorizo. Make the wraps and wrap them in greaseproof or tin foil and freeze them.
If you take them out of the freezer the night before then you can heat them in the microwave, if you forget to take them out then it takes a bit longer.
I usually make enough at a time to cover a run of early shifts.
