BIWI · 19/08/2018 08:37

What about your spelling? Wink

Sugarhunnyicedtea · 19/08/2018 08:37

Right........

Singlenotsingle · 19/08/2018 08:37

Spelling's also important to us pedants.

Metoodear · 19/08/2018 08:38

When people feel bad they have two options to raise them selves up or cut others down

Sadly the grammer police try and embarrass others to make themselves feel better and show how clever their have been a few posts about people correct colleagues at work in front of eveyone

Correcting husbands infrobt of their children but also those who come of threads not to comment on the topic but to mark your work

All wrapped up for concern about people’s children 😕

@Singlenotsingle
😂 so are apostrophes

SubwayA9car · 19/08/2018 08:40

loving the deliberately goady title 😂😂😂

Sugarhunnyicedtea · 19/08/2018 08:41

I believe spelling and grammar (not grammer) is important so I will correct it, especially if the person making the mistake is trying to be clever.
I make mistakes at times, autocorrect is not always my friend. If it's pointed out to me I say thanks and move on.

BIWI · 19/08/2018 08:42

Actually, the apostrophe is used quite correctly there, to indicate that it's 'spelling is ...'

funmummy48 · 19/08/2018 08:42

I'd never correct someone's grammar to embarrass them. I just feel the need to educate them! 😂

IdahoJones · 19/08/2018 08:42

The first two words of that sloppy Cosmopolitan article are 'grammar nazis', which seems like pretty a stupid and offensive way to find something stupid and offensive.

Singlenotsingle · 19/08/2018 08:43

Thank you BIWI Grin

steff13 · 19/08/2018 08:44

I typically only correct someone's grammar online if he/she is being a dick. Otherwise I just do it in my head.

And you don’t find it a trifle unscientific that, at least according to that great scientific journal Cosmopolitan, the study has concluded that the ‘introverts’ who are more likely to notice typos are ‘less agreeable people’? Hmm

BIWI · 19/08/2018 08:45

OP you've set yourself up here, really, by starting a thread like this! Grin

Yes, it's shitty to correct people's SPAG to make them feel bad.

But equally, I've always thought it's weird how many people on MN seem to want to defend poor SPAG.

Metoodear · 19/08/2018 08:46

From experience, the clear answer is - not at all. One should never - NEVER - correct people when they are in the process of talking.

It has the following effects -

Makes the person feel inferior almost instantly
Makes the person feel you're a complete idiot to not do it softly, indirectly, later
Makes it a big ego issue and never achieves the desired result

Depends on the context. Donald Trump on Twitter - go for it. Someone who is obviously distressed on here - not so much.

IdahoJones · 19/08/2018 08:46

I too would like to stand in defence of Singlenotsingle's apostrophe

PolkerrisBeach · 19/08/2018 08:46

Big difference between a typo and a lack of understanding. Everyone makes typos. My favourite is "teh" instead of the. Or my phone will randomly chuck in some odd word on predictive text.

But writing "What was you doing last night" or "What's the best fing about been a mum" or "Were I been unreasonable as I could of borrowed her money when she axed me?" - plain wrong. Not typos.

And besides, since when has Cosmo been the arbiter of good manners or common sense?

BIWI · 19/08/2018 08:47

... to be fair, we do all make mistakes when typing quickly, on informal stuff and especially online. But some of the spelling mistakes here are indicative of poor education or lack of understanding. Why wouldn't you correct 'grammer' to 'grammar', when it's been pointed out, for example?

thereareflowersinmygarden · 19/08/2018 08:50

Actually, what the study says is that introverts are more likely to correct others.

Correcting people makes you a moron anyway, introvert or not.

AuntieStella · 19/08/2018 08:50

The 'grammar police' are fuck all to do with grammar.

They are people who pick on other posters. And just as much a set of arses as all the others who nitpick about anything at all.

The people who actually care about language on MN have their own topic, and people are always surprised at how warm and interesting it is. And we only correct people if they ask for help by starting a thread

That said, one of the things I like about MN is it's inclusive nature, which does mean a major shibboleth against txt spk and other contractions (makes life harder than it need be for those using assistive technology) and a general presupposition that everyone who can write clear standard English does so - because that is enormously helpful to those with dyslexia and those for whom English is not the first language.
