AIBU?

To think you don't have a party at home beyond 11pm?

Neighbours in the next street (!) had a party on Saturday night in their garden. The noise started out at reasonable levels at 7pm. Predictably, as they drank into the night, voices got louder, and then the turned up the music to compensate.

We have really, really good double glazing and external insulation. We had all the windows shut, and we were still kept awake until they finally decided to pack up at 3am.

AIBU to think that's it's unacceptable to have loud, late night parties at home? I mean, this is literally what late night licensed pubs and bars are for, right? Why, why, why have it in your own garden, when you must know you are disturbing a whole neighbourhood?

I know legally they're aloud to but I do agree it's very inconsiderate to be making loud noise that late into the night. They could turn the music down and continue the party inside surely.

Did you ask them to keep the noise down? If not, then they might not think anyone was bothered and do it again

there was one around here going on till 1.30am. i was just glad it wasnt my immediate neighbours and a few doors down. but it did seem very inconsiserate. loud music, shouting, at one point they were clapping?!

Can’t imagine anyone wanting to end a party at 11.
Have you spoken to them?

They would have to be the most insensitive pigs on earth to think that the racket they were making wasn't keeping everyone up! I mean, it's obvious right? Hence my point - if you want to have a party, hire an appropriate venue. We live in a city where you can hire the top room of a pub for small change.

it would annoy me because i like my sleep, but i don't think its unerasonable as a one off tbh.

Every weekend, massively unreasonable. A few times a year, wouldn't upset me. DH and I and all thr DC sleep with ipods playing sounds of thunderstorms though as its amazing white noise, so wouldn't disturb us. I really reccomend it!

"Can’t imagine anyone wanting to end a party at 11"

No, exactly.

Therefore a domestic house is an inappropriate location for one.

A party could go on all night, why stop at 11?!
But they need to be considerate as it gets later.
So I'd say lower the music at 11 and inside at midnight

Have you never had a party OP?

Not unreasonable as a one off on a Saturday night. I wouldn't hesitate to do the same, but would probably pop a friendly note through my immediate neighbours doors/mention it in passing.

tombytown - Yes, I've thrown parties. I hire a fucking pub, restaurant or bar to do it. I don't have it in my own home, where the noise will affect all the neighbours.

Completely depends how often in my opinion.

Occasionally I think it's live and let live. It's only when it is a regular occurrence that I think you have a right to complain.

Bottle it's 'allowed', aloud is like singing aloud, girls aloud..

The occasional party I think is fine and you'll just have to seethe privately... if it's every weekend, I'd be having a polite chat

nononsene · 18/06/2018 09:53

Any decent party would just be getting going at 11pm!!

As others have said it depends on the frequency. As a one off it's fine, but unreasonable if it's every weekend.

YABU; what grown-up has a party that finishes at 11? Confused

If it's a one-off then I'd say let it go; if it happens regularly, then complain.

critiqueofeveryday I cant believe you’re still this upset to be swearing about it on Monday morning. If it’s a one off, shrug it off and let it go. If they keep doing it, use those stroppy words of yours and say something to them instead of strangers on the internet.

Thanks for the English lesson @spanishwife - I’m sure the PP really appreciates it...

OP I think as a one off you just accept it. Now you can throw a party at home instead of hiring somewhere.

My (made up on the spot now) rules would be:

  • No music outside after 11
  • Quiet music inside after 12/nothing that could travel through to another house

... on a Friday or Saturday night only, NYE an exception. House parties (as opposed to quieter gatherings) once a month max.

Obviously it wouldn't work for everyone, but it should mean a relative degree of peace and quiet AND people getting to socialise in their own homes as they're entitled to (if they want to do it more frequently they can go to the friend's house!).

I tore a strip off my fiance for bringing his mate around drunk on a Tuesday evening and talking loudly in the garden disturbing others and in the house disturbing me on a fecking Tuesday at 3am! I agree OP - there are places for being noisy and sociable early in the morning, and domestic streets are not it!

If it happens once or twice a year, it wouldn't bother me at all.

I AM TIRED! I was kept up til 3am on Saturday! Grin

Can I make one thing crystal clear I have never been to a party that has finished at 11pm. Therefore, given the late hours that are customary for such things, DON'T FUCKING HAVE THEM AT HOME!!

It's just a cheap, skanky thing to do. If you want to have a party, hire a proper venue.

Either turn the music off and close the windows after 10pm, or hire a venue that isn't next to people's houses.

It is possible to have a nice time without (a) playing loud music or (b) shouting/screaming loudly the whole time.

Yes we know you are having a great time and didn't see fit to invite us. No need to show off and keep the whole street awake :)

@ClaudiaWankleman very welcome. Grown adults shouldn't be making those mistakes.
