Vaping around children?

What's the general consensus? Just curious to hear your opinions. I'm fighting a constant battle with DH at the moment and I wonder if I'm being unreasonable.

I vape and my kids see it. (Teens)

I used to smoke. They saw me smoking when I went outside. It wasn't easy to hide as they got older. We have chats about it and I think mostly they are relieved it's not fags. I don't vape constantly, it's occasional perhaps in the kitchen when they aren't in the room, or outside the car before I drive etc.

I do not vape around anyone else's children because I am aware that not everyone likes it or approves. I try to do it outside or alone but I am also conscious that i don't want to make it an elicit secret, neither something habitual so very hard balance

I am trying to be rational here, with teens I mean I don't think never seeing adults drinking or smoking would mean it's less likely they do or don't do it - teen DD's tell me vaping is RIFE at secondary school, even weed flavours. Or real weed Angry

So I'm quite glad we have more of an open dialogue where we can talk about it, so I have told them that it's still a risk - no one knows the long term effects of vaping and I would like to give up the vaping.

The charging of the bloody thing seems to put mine off Grin

I have to admit it - I hate vaping. I wouldn't subject my kids to huge clouds of sweet smelling vapour if I could avoid it.

I only do menthol!

I think given that the effects of vape smoke aren't known and it does still contain small amounts of harmful chemicals, I would treat it the same as smoking.

I wouldn't put vaping around children in the same category as smoking.

That said if someone vapes near ds he doesn't like it because he doesn't like the "smoke"

I despise vaping in public. The people who do it, IMO, are selfish and inconsiderate cunts. Do theybreally thunknthat other people want to walk behind them? Be around them? Smell their plume of horrible smoky shit?

There's a few that walknto school with their kids in a morning and they let out huge clouds of sickly smoke. Other people look at each other and waft their noses etc but the vapers seem to not give a shit.

I'm an ex smoker and I never smoked around children, even passing one in the street would make me hide the cigarette in my hand and I'd wait till they passed to take a drag. The smoke from vape may not be as toxic but there's so much more of it.

I've seen some pretty scary/scaremongering stories recently (probably due to lack of knowledge and studies) and it would make me think twice if I did vape .

I wouldn't, sets a bad example

It's basically teaching them to smoke. Awful parenting.

If you wouldn't smoke there, you shouldn't vape there.

The smell and billowing plumes of horrible smoke or steam or whatever are really offensive to me. I'd hate anyone to vape around my baby. It should be kept in the same category as cigarette smoke: designated areas only and certainly not near children. Hate the stuff

Honestly it doesn't bother me. If it did I'd say something or not be in places where people do it.

Many vapers are inconsiderate and the ones who describe vaping as their hobby should get a life.

Absolutely not acceptable around children. There is not nearly enough information known about the effects. I had to make my brother stop using his in my house, he used to smoke at the garden gate (hated that I wouldn't let him smoke at the door!) then he gave up and started using an ecig. He was most surprised when I asked him to take it outside!

I absolutely cannot stand smoking. Never have tried, never will do. Foul, lung clogging, air polluting fogs of smoke that everyone else in the vicinity is forced to breathe in regardless of whether they want to or not.
Vaping, though? Granted, we don't know the health implications of that as it's a relatively new thing.
However I'd much rather breathe in a fruity smelling water based/steam thing smell than actual disgusting smoke.
That isn't offensive in the slightest.

JamDonutsRule · 28/02/2017 23:58

I don't find it acceptable as not enough is known about the health implications.

Typical mumsnet superiority from many.

Better to have a mum who is alive, than one who is dead from lung cancer.

There will be no let up regarding vaping. That's because so few smoke cigarettes now, and that crusade is nearly over, so on to the next one.

I don't mind vaping at all. It's like the steam from the kettle to me.

But then again those with noses for roses will obviously say there is something awful about the smell or something.

But then again, they always will.

Vape away OP. Best thing you will ever do. But then nothing is better than good ole cold turkey to the anti everything brigade.

Comparing vaping around kids to smoking around kids is like comparing giving your child a can of coke to giving them a pint of vodka IMO...not anywhere in the same league.

I vape a lot 'closer' to the dc than I used to smoke. When I smoked I would only smoke outside with the door shut. Never in the house or car which is gross.

I vape in the car however...not when the dc are in there but when I'm alone. I vape in the house too, again not sitting next to the dc but when they're not in the same room.

There's no lingering smell and nor does my e cig give out massive plumes of smoke either.

I vape near my ds. Vaped through pregnancy. Vaping now actually. IT'S NOT THE SAME AS SMOKING. NOT AT ALL.

I'm a non smoker with children.

I agree completely with beggin4mercy.

Not the same as smoking but I did notice that my puppy was constantly blinking and squinting when I vaped in same room as him - so for this reason I would not vape around a baby. Puppy / baby v different I know but vaping near them can dry out their eyes apparently when they are developing - I asked GP about it and this is apparently a thing.

Meant to say though: major congrats on switching from cigarettes to vaping -it is not easy so good for you and your kids Flowers

Completely different to smoking.
Obvious it's up to the parents, but wouldn't bother me.
I'd be happy the smoker had packed up!
Better to vape than die of cancer!
Awful parenting Confused would it be better to smoke then?
I'm a non smoker/non vapour
Op on here you're the absolute scum of the earth if you smoke, now people are switching to vapour, now it's them Grin

I'm another that thinks it should have the same restrictions placed on it as smoking; not permissible in public building, in cars with children etc.

I know they're a smoking cessation aid to many, and that's great, but they don't need to be normalised.

Personally, I think the ones that produce huge clouds of vapour are intensely twatty and anti-social. I really can't stand some of the odours they produce either. Synthetic vanilla is a headache-inducing nastiness that I have to dodge on a regular basis.
