Yogasuz · 14/07/2015 19:48

My yoga teacher said that it's usually the poses that we dislike that are the ones we need the most Grin

My favourite poses are -
Love sun salutations
Love warrier sequences
Dancers pose
Goddess/butterfly
I used to dislike Dolphin and fish poses but have enjoyed seeing my progress with them and the challenge as continue to push and breath through them Smile

My least favourite are -
Anything involving hamstrings, mine are so tight I really struggle with them
Really want to do shoulder stand but haven't got the control to get up there and our teacher tells us off if we look like we're throwing ourselves around to get up there!
Camel pose - although am working on it!
Boat pose - my core shakes like anything straight away!
Eagle pose - can do the lower body but can't do the arms at all, are my arms just too short?!

Mary - I love puppy dog and extended child's pose and get a really lovely stretch between my shoulder blades with them which is great.
Thread the needle I've never got much out of. Am I missing something? Where do you feel it?

museumum · 16/07/2015 11:11

Cote - how even are your hips? Is one stronger of more flexible than the other? If you lie with the soles of your feet together does one knee fall further out than the other?
I'd guess that's the key.

CoteDAzur · 16/07/2015 11:34

I've had tendonitis on my hip on the right side but oddly that is the side where I can bring up my foot between the hands during sun salutations.

I had a recent (1 year ago) knee issue on the left side, but don't know if that is related to why I can't bring up the foot on the left.

Feel like my body is falling apart at the age of 44 Sad

stilllearnin · 16/07/2015 11:44

Sorry DK is the publisher Dorling kindersley. You will recognise the look of those BUT I lied! It's actually 'yoga anatomy' published by Hinkler. A quick google and it's cheaply available from the book depository, ebay etc. there are lots of alternatives too though.

CoteDAzur · 16/07/2015 11:46

That sounds great, thank you Smile

Preminstreltension · 16/07/2015 12:08

I'm really good at lying down at the end with a bean bag over my eyes Grin

I have hyper mobile joints so I like the flexibility poses and the stretches because I can do them. I don't seem to have much strength so I don't like those poses - but actually think I should do less flexi stuff and more strength stuff.

I also struggle with bringing leg forward in sun sal - big tummy in the way? And although I like plough I can't stay in it long because I feel like I'm being crushed by my own boobs.

Speaking of boobs, why are all yoga tops racer back? Not good for bra wearers. I usually resort to t shirts with the odd flash of belly in upside down poses.

sleepwhenidie · 16/07/2015 12:30

I don't think yoga tips are designed with boobs in mind tbh Preminstrel Smile. There are lots of racer back sports bras that I think can look good under them though?

CoteDAzur · 16/07/2015 15:34

"feel like I'm being crushed by my own boobs"

Another sensation I will never know in my lifetime Grin

CoteDAzur · 16/07/2015 15:37

Premin - Come & talk about yoga tops on the thread I just started on yoga clothes Smile

magichandles · 16/07/2015 16:59

I have the crushed by boobs thing in plough as well, I really thought it was just me!

I love standing balances, forward bends and going from upward to downward dog.

I strongly dislike backbends.

CoteDAzur · 16/07/2015 17:31

Does everyone over the age of 35 have knees that don't appreciate being on all fours? Or is it just me

sleepwhenidie · 16/07/2015 18:06

Have you tried taking glucosamine/chondoitrin supplements such as Jointace Cote, I suffered a lot with my knees when I ran regularly (given up that silly habit now) and they seemed to help a lot.

ThoseAwfulCurtains · 16/07/2015 21:26

Just back from hot yoga - lovely. I'd love it if we were just left to tip toe away quietly when ready after sharvasana (sp?) but then I suppose I'd never leave Grin

museumum · 16/07/2015 21:53

I suffocate in the plough too. And I have boobs. But I don't think it's that - when I look at my teacher in the plough her hips are directly above her shoulders and her back is tall and straight. She makes a right-angled triangle with her legs as the diagonal.
I know that in comparison I'm all curled and slumped over I make a sort of squished up blob :(

Preminstreltension · 16/07/2015 22:03

Goddamn you museummum. I know you are right Angry

CoteDAzur · 16/07/2015 22:43

I've taken glucosamine supplements for a while but maybe I need to continue.

maybemyrtle · 16/07/2015 23:57

I like plough! Also crow, side plank (arrow?), bow, child's pose. I don't enjoy (can't do!!) wheel, headstands, tree. I am learning to enjoy pigeon. Oh and down dog, I really enjoy being sort of upside down.

5hell · 17/07/2015 15:42

ooh, love the new yoga topic!

favourites:
shoulder stand, bakasana, head balance and their respective variations.
warriors / triangle
sun salutations

least favourites:
peacock
Parsva Sarvangasana (the one exception of the shoulder stands above!)
some of the strange warm up my lovely teacher has us do ;)

Preminstreltension · 17/07/2015 17:21

I didn't know peacock pose so I just looked it up. Don't be silly, no one can do that. Can they ?? Confused

CoteDAzur · 17/07/2015 17:31

I certainly can't. My poor wrists won't even carry me through crow pose.

stilllearnin · 17/07/2015 18:12

All this talk has hit me wondering whether I should try a class with a bit more structure and poses and stuff. I'm just off to a gong bath now so might see what that throws up!

Monkeyinshoes · 18/07/2015 19:17

I love warrior sequences, shoulder stand, plough, tree, down dog and up dog.

I can't do crow or side plank on one side due to dodgy wrist.

Archfarchnad · 19/07/2015 11:26

I'm having trouble understanding some of this thread because I do yoga in a different language, and it's a fairly non-standard practice, so we don't do a lot of these poses, but do others that haven't been mentioned at all.

I love balancing poses like tree and eagle, but still wobble dangerously at times. But they're great because I have to concentrate so much it actually stops my mind wandering elsewhere.

I have fairly strong stomach muscles so absolutely relish the bridge. We do a variation of that which I don't know the name of - where you stick one leg out to the back so it's straight, while retaining the bridge position.

We've spent ages this month practicing warrior 1 (but we call it the hero pose), and again, I love the backwards stretching.

My absolute nemesis is anything involving forwards stretching with straight legs, because the muscles behind my legs are pathetic (is that the hamstrings?). Even the downward dog is a struggle (made worse by slippy hands, which I had some great tips about in a previous thread).

ThoseAwfulCurtains · 19/07/2015 12:30

Please can you pass on the slippy hands tips?

CoteDAzur · 19/07/2015 14:25

For slippery hands, my best tip is to not put on any cream anywhere after your morning shower. Not even on your face or legs.

Also, a good non-slippy mat helps a lot. We have Manduka mats in the studio that are very good in this regard, and I have a Lululemon one that seriously doesn't slip at all.
