Favourite and least favourite poses?

My yoga teacher said that it's usually the poses that we dislike that are the ones we need the most Grin

My favourite poses are -
Love sun salutations
Love warrier sequences
Dancers pose
Goddess/butterfly
I used to dislike Dolphin and fish poses but have enjoyed seeing my progress with them and the challenge as continue to push and breath through them Smile

My least favourite are -
Anything involving hamstrings, mine are so tight I really struggle with them
Really want to do shoulder stand but haven't got the control to get up there and our teacher tells us off if we look like we're throwing ourselves around to get up there!
Camel pose - although am working on it!
Boat pose - my core shakes like anything straight away!
Eagle pose - can do the lower body but can't do the arms at all, are my arms just too short?!

Thanks Cote. I'll go with the slippy hands though. If I didn't put moisturiser everywhere in the morning, I'd look like a Zygon by tea time Grin

CoteDAzur · 19/07/2015 17:42

I take moisturiser with me a slap it on everywhere after the yoga class in the morning Smile

Googled Zygon - Eeek!

Awful, two interesting suggestions were buying a pair of those fingerless cycling gloves that have non-stick stuff on the palms, and taking along a chalk ball/stick like they use for rock climbing. I'm going for the gloves, just for the standing sequences!

Obviously a good non-stick mat would be ideal, but we have mats provided for us for the standing exercises and take our own towels etc for the lying poses. Sadly I seem to have a very bad slippy reaction to the studio mats, worse than anyone else in my group.

I'm afraid not moisturising isn't an option for me either - my yoga class is in the evening, and going without moisturiser all day is too much for my middle-aged skin to contemplate. I live in central Europe so we need to use some serious hand-cream throughout the day in winter too to avoid chapping.

favorites
pigeon variations
frog pose/half frog (Bhekasana)
splits
lotus
any 'bound' poses
plough & shoulderstand

dislike
headstand-it always just gives me a headache

CoteDAzur · 19/07/2015 23:21

I really wish I could do binding poses. Any bind will do. I don't know if it's my posture (which is still far from perfect), tummy, or chunky arms, but I am not anywhere near a bind yet.

Love my headstands, though Smile

suzannecanthecan · 20/07/2015 14:29

there must be a bound pose that would work for you Cote, what about www.popsugar.com/fitness/How-Do-Bound-Extended-Side-Angle-7213514 ?

I like the feeling of concentrating your energy that they give me, I think I could do a bound lotus for a while when I was much younger...or did I dream that.

I can do a headstand against a wall but it feels the opposite of restorative so I've never had it as part of a regular practice.
A huge omission in the yoga scheme of things I admit Blush

I do hot yoga, obviously v sweaty, and one instructor said that if you are exerting pressure on your hands properly, you won't slip (easier said than done I know), but if you think about pushing through pads of fingers and heels of hands, all downwards and equally then you don't slide...

TheRealMaryMillington · 20/07/2015 20:27

I think the binding is mostly about flexibility in the shoulders. Also probably really sucking in the middle.

I can do that bound extended side angle, and can just about grab my big toe in standing and seated lotus on a good day but marichasanas are totally evading me.

suzannecanthecan · 20/07/2015 21:21

I also really like lake pose

CoteDAzur · 21/07/2015 13:55

Thank you suzanne. I'll try that extended bound side angle pose Smile

I like cow face pose (flexible shoulders), warrier poses (make me feel all powerful) and bendy back poses like camel or bow. And I really love how downward facing dog feels in my shoulders (my hamstrings struggle a bit more!).

I don't like balances, not helped by my current teacher not being great at them herself. I had a teacher a few years ago who spent a session really concentrating on lots of balances and it did make a difference.
