Couldn’t manage to stay awake until end of Spain v Portugal (did try)
Happy to wake up to USA out because of the open corruption about red card.

downloadtoad · 07/07/2026 06:36

Oh my god I missed USA getting smashed?!

dapsnotplimsolls · 07/07/2026 07:05

Great news to wake up to 😁

Re: the politics. Nobody except Trump and Infantino made this political. And it started with the peace prize. Even with that I think most people would have not reacted like this to this match. we all know FIFA is corrupt, we all know Trump is corrupt but as a general rule fans will turn a blind eye to that as long as it doesn’t affect the day to day playing of the sport egregiously. This was just too in your face and everyone involved seems to be lying about it.

The team themselves obviously don’t deserve this. Balogun has had much of the attention through something that doesn’t seem to be his own fault but I can’t imagine it’s great for the rest of the team that everyone thinks you are screwed without one player.

The only people who come out of this well are the Belgian players to seem to have been rage baited into turning up to the tournament, the Belgian football association that raised the appeal and UEFA who have been having fun trolling FIFA for a while now.

IAmKerplunk · 07/07/2026 07:30

I am so glad there are no more stupid o’clock kick offs this week! 😴

LuckyHazelFox · 07/07/2026 08:04

Crushed23 · 07/07/2026 02:42

What does this even mean? 😂 The players are playing their sport and the better team (by a mile) is winning. I wish people would stop cheapening football with politics, xenophobia and other nonsense!

Think it was clearly obvious what I meant. If Trump hadn't intervened in the game, we wouldn't be having this discussion. He tried his luck, it paid off and hence the heat brought on his country's team.

TheSmellOfSea · 07/07/2026 08:38

Haha ⚽️ karma

DuncinToffee · 07/07/2026 08:43

Good result to wake up to

ChicOliveCritic · 07/07/2026 09:03

Belgian blitz! The third and fourth goals! 😊⚽❤️

DuncinToffee · 07/07/2026 09:06

Belgium beats, then trolls, U.S. team on Monday night

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 07/07/2026 09:29

The US team are in the WC representing the USA. Donald Trump's actions have given them an unfair advantage. Therefore (as a non-American) I really didn't want the team to win. Any team given an unfair advantage doesn't deserve to win.

I have/had nothing against any of the US team. But I really didn't want them to win, because it would have been unfair.

All of this is because Trump and Infantino think it's OK to cheat. They made this political. They cheapened this. It's not xenophobic to be anti-cheating.

I personally think FIFA needs an investigation into some of its practices. If Infantino can be bought/swayed by Trump then that’s wrong. FIFA probably wouldn’t be investigated though, they’re a law unto themselves.

RafaistheKingofClay · 07/07/2026 10:51

Did see someone say Blatter loved money but at least he also loved football earlier.

That Belgium post had got 216k likes on Twitter. Which is not exactly the place you’d expect it to be popular these days.

Have to say that looking at my feed I’m not sure this has split down political lines. It seems to be Americans who only ever watch WC or big tournament football vs every other football supporter. And some of those are pro-Trump.

Netflix had a documentary about the corruption of FIFA a few years ago. There was a lot of focus on Blatter and I was shocked by how corrupt and shady he and the whole organisation are. But he is a saint compared to Infantino. The WC should never have been given to a country who discriminate against certain teams and actively seek to interfere in the game itself.

DuncinToffee · 07/07/2026 11:02

It was awarded to the US, Canada and Mexico in 2018, a few day before the WC kicked off in Russia.

Then there was Qatar 2022 and ofcourse Saudi in 2034.

2030 will be Spain, Morocco and Portugal

GoneWithTHeWindJammers · 07/07/2026 12:12

How about England, Scotland ad Wales to jointly host the World Cup?

Hopefully that means the end of the 'As an American, here's why I would get rid of the offside rule' posts on social media!

That is the 2028 Euros, incl Ireland.

DuncinToffee · 07/07/2026 12:16

And we will host the 2035 Women World Cup
