Question ref working part time for another employer whilst on mat leave with another firm- will this affect my smp (can't get a definitive answer from HR!!)

Hello
Am really hoping that flowery or someone else in the know will be able to help. I have put this question to my own HR dept but have recived a rather ambiguous reply and am worried as am going on mat leave in three weeks!
Basically I work 3 days a week for my 'proper' employer (professional job etc- been ther nearly ten years). I am entitled to both SMP and a generous Occupational maternity pay.
For the last few years I have also done a day a week working for another employer, nothing at all related to my professional occupation and something I can easily continue to do from home whilst I am on mat leave.
I have asked my main employer if I can continue to do this whilst I am on mat leave with them, I was mainly wanting to know if continuing to work with the other employer would affect my SMP as I have no idea whether this is 'allowed.'in general terms.
HR have come back and said that it 'should' be ok as long as I am not working full time for employer B whilst on mat leave.
This is not as definite as I was hoping for!
Can anyone clarify this for me, if so I would be very grateful as need to make some type of decision ref employment B in the next week or two.
Many Thanks

I am pretty sure you cannot work for anyone, apart from your 10 "keeping in touch" days without forfeiting your SMP.

The people to talk to are the Inland Revenue. You could try this number: 0845 300 0627. It's one of their national help lines.

OK, here's the deal:

Your Main employer is company A, second employer is company B.

If, during the qualifying period, you:

-worked for both company A and company B
-ARE entitled to SMP from A
-ARE NOT entitled to SMP from B

You can continue to work for company B even if you get SMP from company A.

However,

-If you ARE entitled to SMP from company B
-OR started work for company B after the qualifying period

Your SMP will stop when you resume work.

Nice link here
