Maternity leave - do you have to stay in the country?

Currently on maternity leave and thinking of going to the US for 3 or 4 months before going back to work. I'm not aware of any restrictions saying you have to stay in the country to retain the right to SMP and your usual employment rights. Does anyone know for certain?

Can't think of any reason, unless your employer has 'staying in touch days' scheduled where you would need to go into the office?

Not for employment rights. Don't see why you would for SMP either, although I've not checked the detail of the legislation on that one.
