Leave permanent work for contract ?

Hello, I am hoping that someone can give some advice/thoughts re contract work.

I am in full time, permanent work in IT. My place of work is a 5 minute drive from home, and I am able to drop my 5 year old to been unhappy school each morning. However, I have been unhappy at work for a couple of years now as I know that I could earn a lot more as a contractor, but would have to travel into London ( 1hr+ door to door)and would not be able to drop my DD to school. I really am underpaid where I am, and have asked for a payrise several times but keep getting fobbed off and told to wait, but nothing happens.

Does anyone have any words of wisdom for me? I keep thinking that contrat work would enable me to earn more money, take longer periods off work if I wanted, but would mean that I would be travelling further to work.

Thanks in advance.

Contract work is also less predictable; you may have work, you may not. Can you handle the uncertainty? Are you only unhappy at work because it's poorly-paid, or are there other issues that bother you?

The contract market in many areas is as poor in provision as the permanent market.
Depends on your speciality.

14 hours per week will be spent commuting which is the equivalent to 2 full says work
Will contracting pay you two days extra salary?

There is nothing out there, I would give my eye teeth for a job, if you have one hold on to it. IMO
