Can anyone advise my dad? (sorry, long)

Dad got made redundant just before Christmas. At the end of April he finally got a job he really liked (he's 63 and wasn't hopeful of getting a job). They asked him to start just before May Day bank holiday. He had a holiday booked 17 May for 1 week which they knew about.

13 May he injured his back at work doing heavy lifting. It went into full spasm early hours of Friday 14 May and he was taken to hospital by ambulance. Doctors said (I think) he had muscle damage & gave him anti-inflammatories & strong painkillers. As he didn't get discharged until 10am Friday morning he phoned work and was told 'don't worry, have your holiday and get well soon'.

He got back from holiday Tuesday, went into work today & explained his back was still bad and he couldn't do heavy lifitng right now but coould still do all paperwork, light lifting etc.

11:30am today he was called into boss's office and told he wasn't suitable for the job 'for reasons I don't wish to discuss'. He was given option of working rest of week or to leave now and receive notice pay. He's got nothing in writing (as yet).

Can someone advise if he has any options?

Well as he's been there less than a year, they don't have to even give reasons if they want to dismiss him, so from that point of view they've done nothing wrong, as long as there's no discrimination or anything.

Is there any question of liability in terms of his injury? If he feels work were responsible and he has lost a job because of it, that could be something to think about taking further.

Thanks for replying. I'm not sure about their liability for the injury. I'm seeing him tonight. He's really down because he's only had the job for a couple of weeks and he was really, really happy to be back in work.
