I am a chartered accountant but not working for five years as had my dds. I have been doing bits and bobs from home but now would like to do more. The problem i find is that i dont feel confident offering to do tax returns - i do two clients now and family ones but find it a bit stressful as its just me. Should i just offer book keeping work? Has anyone done similar - where would be best to advertise? Thanks in advance

Hello - yes! Fellow chartered accountant here.

I am ex-Big 4, the went into industry and then after my DS was born went part time into a project role. A year ago, following a resorganisation I was made redundant and I've been working for myself for the last year.

What I have been doing is freelance financial accounting and project work. I don't do many hours per week but like you I am thinking about whether to start offering accounting services/tax returns etc.

Do you know about the ICAEW's Narrowing the Gap initiative?

Have you seen your regions ICAEW courses? If you are in the SE then have a look at the SESCA courses.

Last year I went on the Taking the Plunge course.

I definitely need to get a good system going for CPD etc and probably need to find others in similar positions (like you!) to network/discuss things with.

If you'd like to CAT me I am happy to chat off board? Maybe we can motivate each other. I have an ambition to assist and inspire others to work flexibly (see post I started in this topic) and I want to get back into training so if you'd like to be a bit of a guinea pig then get in touch.

I'm toying with going freelance too. I'm a CA in practice at the moment but am very close to starting up by myself. I'm comfortable with accounting and business plan/project work, feel nervous too about the tax advice! Tax is a bloody nightmare.

Will look at thise links you've put up too FA.
