i am thinking of leaving nhs to join prison service and just want some views on the job, and also if it is wise to change in the current political and economical climate?

have a friend who works for HMP. she loves it and been there for a couple of years now having transfered from NHS. Though she is employed by the PCT as that's how the healthcare contract is set locally.

She will tell you that there is a high turn around of staff - you either like it or don't. Apparently, there's an unwritten rule if you make it over 6 mths then you'll stay.

In the current state of affairs I'm staying put in NHS, hoping for a nice redunancy package. though am probably bottom of the list as too expensive with a long service history.

I've just got a job at the local HMP and it IS NHS; just PCT as another poster said. If you do decide to give it a whirl, whatever you do, go and have a look round first to help you make up your mind. It is NOT everyone's cup of tea and you may well want to fully research it first. Good luck!
