is it worth joining a union?

I work in the media industry (private sector) and most people I know do not belong to a union. Things are likely to get a little bumpy at work and I'm now wondering if the £40 per month subscription will be worth it. What do you think? Would they really be able to help me if I get made redundant? Have seen some very unfair and underhand dealings recently, but not sure if they're entirely illegal.

Unions are very good both myself and dh are members but pay nowhere near the subs that you are quoting think we both pay about £8 a month so would be concerned about paying £40 per month.

t'is a percentage of your wages, that's how they charge

Both mine and dh charge a set amount per membership - might be worth looking at alternatives.

This was the cost for BECTU. Are there any other good media based unions?
