Contract not being renewed, any rights?

My friend currently has a 6 month contract which she thinks is not going to be renewed when it runs out.
She has been employed continously by this place for just over the 2 years, first of all on a temporary basis, relief work etc, this is the first permanent contract she has had.
If they don't renew, would she have any rights as she has been there for over 2 years, albiet not on a permanent contract?

If she has a contract, the terms for ending that contract will be included. If it says the contract ends after 6 months then she has no rights beyond that period. Her employer always said the contract would end on that date and it will. Your friend has known that all along

They may choose to extend it but that's their choice. That's why contractors often get paid higher rates, because they have no security.

She should be entitled to at least statutory redundancy if she's been employed as an employee, not a freelancer, for more than 2 years.

This is not massive amounts (google it) but it's better than nothing.

Thanks, she's actually been quite badly behaved, not turning up, attitude to bosses etc her own fault really.

I'm surprised she's not discipined for not turning up. Going AWAL is usually gross misconduct and therefore can result in dismissal.

If I were your friend I'd resign (so it doesn't say contract not renewed on any reference), buck my ideas up and look for another job.
