changes to my contract

Hi. I am looking for advice re my contract. I have been working for a public sector organisation for 5 years, with over a year to run on my contract. My manager has, for various reasons, been told to move me to another department in the organisation doing basically the same role but for another section. I met with my new management and was told that in this new post I will now be expected to work weekends and possibly evenings on a rota basis, starting 2 weeks from now. I currently work part-time monday-friday on set days. I explained that this was short notice and would make my current childcare arrangements impossible. Myself and team of colleagues were then told to arrange our rota and report back (we all said we were unhappy re this arrangement). I wrote to my HR manager who has written to our managers re this and suggesting 3 alternatives. We have offered to cover 6 days a week OR do oncall telephone cover at weekends . We also suggested that as they are still to about to advertise for another team member then they could then employ somebody to specifically work weekends. This has all been rejected by management without any discussion. They have said they have evidence that proves a need for weekend work (though we have not been shown it) - this was researched before by our current management and the need was not shown. What can I do now about this? I love my job and do not want to leave and cannot afford to but I cannot get weekend childcare.

If you work in the public sector are you in a union? They should be helping you with this if so.

Have a read here about changing your terms and conditions, and here about if you disagree with proposed changes.

Hi flowerybeanbag

I am in a union so will be contacting my steward today about this - was hoping to avoid it! thanks very much for the links. Previous posts are right - you should get a mumsnet medal for all your help!

No problem, do definitely talk to your steward. Changes to contracts are definitely something the union should be involved in.
