How do you become an academic?

Just out of curiosity. Did you do your degree,masters, phd etc and get offered a post or did you actively tailor your education towards lecturing/research?

Anyone?

Hello! I did my degree, worked in the 'real world' for a few years, then went back to do my MSc and then my Phd. I am now a postdoctoral research fellow, and am hoping that the next step will be lecturing. I'm not quite sure what you mean by actively tailoring your education towards lecturing/research, and how that would differ from getting a Phd but might be being a bit thick!
