Until I took my maternity leave (Dec 2008) I was a really successful freelance journalist - could have had enough work for 24hrs/7 days a week. Went back to work last October (five months ago) and things are dire. I'm really starting to panic. I try and make it to networking dos/events but when I see my contacts they say they've no freelance work at all. I had a really good book idea - if I say so myself - but after contacting 30 agents (I have had a couple of books published before) I was told that because I'm not celebrity enough I didn't have a hope in hell of getting my book published. Someone suggested mumsnet as a source of help. This is kind of a bit of desperate thread! xxx

do you need a co-author with a higher media profile or a celebrity to endorse/write introduction to your book?

I think that may be the way to go (apologies for delay in replying - have been going for job interviews and doing some work!)

Hi, I really empathize with you. I am self-employed occupational health nurse who is suffering because of public sector cuts. I have been even trying to get employment and although being successful in being offered jobs have been unable to negotiate hours to fit with the family. I feel like I am never going to work again!I am always looking for new ideas and opportunities to work, and keep thinking positively that I will find something that fits the bill.

Good luck and take heart in the fact that someone else is feeling the same as you. x
