Going from benefits to self employed/freelance?

Has anyone had any experience of this and/or advice?

I'm starting to get my back sorted, albeit slowly, and so daring to think of working again. However I don't feel that being employed in a shop or office will allow my much flexibility in terms of if my back gets worse, and it looks like it's going to be a long process - just what I wanted hmm. Whereas I am good at web design and have been meaning to take it from a hobby to a career for a long time, and working from home will allow me some flexibility (eg. lying down to do the less design orientated stuff - like paperwork)

Obviously I wont magically have loads of clients to start off with, and I don't know the best way to transition into it without being flat broke. Is there any support for new businesses that I could look into?
