Cover letter tips? Help please

We are looking to relocate this year to be nearer family etc etc. My job is straight forward enough as I can do it from anywhere but DH will have to apply for a new job.

He has found a post he really likes the look of so is trying to put together a really good application. They have requested a cover letter which I have never had to do before so I don't know where to start. I imagine it's got to be fairly eye catching to get them to read the CV attached.

Does anyone have any tips? Should he mention relocating (the address might look a bit strange - we're 100 miles away from the job at the moment)? Should he mention why?

I'd be really grateful for any tips as we really, really want him to get this job so we can go, go, go!!

What job is applying for?
Just try googling 'job application cover letter tips' and you'll find loads of stuff.

If it's something like a teaching post however, the covering letter is the bit where he really sells himself, unless they specify something different.

Thanks luciemule, we took your advice and found some great bit of info on tailoring a letter to the job. Fingers crossed now!
