Becoming a Bookkeeper

I worked in accounts/finance for 10 years before leaving work to have a baby. I've just returned after 3 years, and though I love the job I hate the long hours and being away from my daughter (and I'd like another soon). I don't have any accountancy qualifications but would like to train as a bookkeeper so I can go self employed.

What qualifications do I need and what practical experience should I get before setting up in business?

Hm is it the AAT you need? I'm sure you can do it on a night time at college.

Or the IAB qualifications. I did these over 2 years at FE collge, one day per week, and have been a very happpy self-employed bookkeeper for 5 years now, working term time only!
Check out what courses your local FE colleges run, that should help you decide.
Good luck

Thanks for your replies. I've been looking into it further and have decided to do the AAT bookkeeping qual. and take that on to the full AAT.
