Returning from mat leave to unsuitable role - Help!!

Hi All,

I'm due back in work in a few weeks, following going off on mat leave at the start of the year. I work for a well known huge national company - I'm going back before 12 months, and have been told that following a restructure my previous role has gone, so I have been slotted into a different role in the same department. The new role has absolutely no similarity to my previous role, as is completely different and highly specialised involving the use of complex IT packages. I've been told I'll have training, but I'm a complete technophobe!! They are not budging, and not offering me redundancy either.

Surely this isn't right...I don't know what else to do now so I thought a post on here may lead to someone being able to help or advise me. I'm so stressed over the whole thing it's ruined my final few weeks of being off on mat leave.

I though us Mums were supposed to be looked after?! Any advice would be really helpfull

Thanks in advance

Are you in a union? If not, you need to speak to Human Resources. Mothers returning to work after maternity leave have certain rights and your employers need to consider these very carefully. I'll have a nosey for some info.

After a look around, it looks like your situation may be more complicated because you are returning after 26 weeks. Thiswebsite has some useful information.

It is very stressful. I also had problems with my employers pushing the boundries (and trying their luck) when I returned to work after maternity leave, so can totally sympathise with your situation. I spoke to Human resources who helped with my situation.

I hope you manage to resolve it, or at least return to a job you'll be happier doing.
