Should i pay tax?

I have just started work after a 3 yr break & its only 15 hrs a week at minimum wage.

I got my wage slip today & it shows that my tax code is BR & i have paid £17.60 tax with a take home of £70.90.

I thought i would have had a tax free allowance before paying tax but it doesnt look like.

Is this right? Or is it just an emergency tax code & i will get the tax back?

You area allowed to earn £6475 a year before paying tax, so if this is your only earned income, it would seem wrong. BR is the code for when all your pay is taxed at 20% I think, which if this isn't a second job, would seem to be wrong. Call your local tax office?

Thanks for your reply,this is my only job & i get no other income from anything else.

I will ask them in work about it as it may be an emergency code (i am hoping anyway)!

did you fill in a P46 when you started?
You should have, they send it to the tax office and get a coding notice for you.
It may be that the timing just hasn't worked, if this is a case you should get a coding through before your next pay period, you pay/tax is then calculated cumulatively to date for the tax year and the tax deducted this time would be repaid to you next time.
If they don't have a code they have to use the BR.

If you haven't filled in a P46 ask your employer about it.
If you have I would ring HMRC and ask what is happening.

looks like an emergency code, so you're on the wrong tax rate. Check with your employer and once you're on the right rate the overpay should be refunded (nice when that happens).
