what to put in letter of resignation?

am handing in my notice tomorrow but i have absolutely no idea what to write.

have just been working in a shop, only need to give 1weeks notice, so it doesnt need to be anything special the only starting line i can think of is 'it is with regret that i give one weeks notice that i wish to terminate my employment'.....

but i really dont want to put that- i have NO regrets, they have been pretty horrendous to work for, and i dont need a reference from them.

i just want to be very brief, say that im leaving, want to take letter in tomorrow so that can finish on wednesday next week.

anybody any good at writing these things? any suggestions please on what to put???

Please take this as my one week notice to terminate my employment with Company.

Any rules about how you need to give notice? (I bet there aren't). If you can just hand in a letter to your boss and you want the employment to end next Wed, then do it this Wed. I would just say:

Dear xxxx

I am giving notice of termination of my employment with xxxx in accordance with my contract of employment . I understand that my last day at work will therefore be Wednesday 21 October.

Three points - actually, if you want to give a week's notice to end next Wed, you should give the notice on Thursday, but most people think of a week including the day in question so you'd probably be better giving the notice on Wed and saying when your last day will be.

I assume you've got no plans to bring any claims against them. If you did then you might want to phrase the letter differently.

Do they owe you any holiday. If so, remind them about it.

i dont think they owe me any holiday... i am contracted to do 32hrs per week and i think my holiday was paid at 25hrs per week- is that really right??

i have temporarily reduced my hours to 3days a week, and i dont have childcare on a thursday, so i was hoping to do mon, tues, wed next week and get it all out the way so i had rest of week to prepare for new job.

i havent been shifts for next week yet(and VERY much doubt the rota had been done) but childminder needs to know hours for next week and i promised i would find out tomorrow.

is there any reason NOT to give a longer notice period (ie.week and a day!)

i do have a contract but only just, i had to pester and pester for it, got a copy last month when i was making arrangements for new job

Holiday should be based on your hours, so that doesn't sound right tbh.

Yes, you can give a week and a day and so could do it tomorrow saying that your last day will be next Wednesday. Just don't say that you're giving "a week's notice" - just "notice of termination, my last day will be xxx".

the holiday thing has confused me. i remember reading a thread on here which explained why you got paid for less hours on holiday than when you work, so i just kind of accepted it. have not received payslip yet (paid a few weeks ago) so i will ask for that tomorrow so i can check it out.

i was running the shop one day and printed something from the back office computer which stated i was paid for 54hrs (over 2weeks) although officially i shouldnt have been looking at that information, dismissable offence so couldnt actually bring the matter up with them.

Holiday pay is odd if you work shifts and different hours each week, but I should get them to check if you're owed anything - then check that out -(unless you've taken more holiday than you think you're due!).

yes am worried that might be a possibility! i started there in the middle of june, have taken 2weeks hols...

hmm, will only have been there 4mnths and get 4weeks per year, so probably will keep quiet about that one!
