So after much debate with DH, friends and myself I've decided to resign from my job and become a stay at home mum for a while (flex wrk request rejected ...). I'm currently still on maternity leave and taking annual leave after for 4 weeks. Supposed to go back in Nov. I was just going to send a resignation letter at beginning of October but am in two minds whether I should also send an email to my manager to advise him I'm resigning and letter is on its way...or should I just let him be surprised by the letter??

Depends on your relationship with him. I get on well with my boss so would forewarn her but if you've had issues then just send the letter.

I would send the resignation letter to the manager. Let him pass it on to HR.

Can't see how it will be any more of a surprise to have a resignation letter than to have an email.

Plus your manager will know all about your request for flexible working so it won't be that much of a surprise.

You may have to repay some mat leave money if you had an enhanced package, checkyour contract etc.

Personally i would discuss with my boss first.

What's the difference between an email saying you are resigning and a resignation letter - either will be an equal surprise.

I would be disappointed if a member of my team resigning felt they didn't want to speak to me - I think unless you've had issues you should give your manager a ring, let him know your plans and say a letter is in the post.

Thanks for your replies. Don't want to call as he is the one I feel really let down by...he was in full support of flexi time plans before baby arrived and has really let me down at the meeting I had after I handed in the request. I think I will just send a letter.
Thankfully I do not need to pay any mat. pay back, I already checked this with HR

And you're right....no difference between an email and letter...not sure what I was thinking there

That sucks about flexi time being rejected

In your situation, I would keep it formal, but write something along the lines of "in light of my request for flexible working being rejected, I am unfortunately unable to return to work"

Then he'll know he let you down.
