when to notify work of intention to return to work

when i informed work of my intention to go on maternity leave they sent me a letter confirming it and saying i was due back 1 year later.
I would like to go back after 6 months/26 weeks, when do i need to tell them this?

You must give at least 8 weeks notice of your intention to return to work if this is before the end of the 52 week period allowed for maternity leave. Hope that helps.
