Anyone done the TESOL (Eng. as 2nd lang.) course?

Hi, I made enquiries months ago about the Trinity College TESOL course with a view to possibly changing career to a teacher of English to speakers of other languages.

I didn't pursue it but it's been at the back of my mind, particularly because I'm not happy in my current career.

It's a one day a week course for a year. They've just got in touch to say that although I've missed the deadline for an interview there are still vacancies, and am I interested?

I need to make a quick decision. Have you or anyone you know done this type of training, and more to the point, have they got a job at the end of it?

I've done one but for different reasons. I work as a governess abroad so I needed some theoretical background on teaching the children I look after English.

It was really, really interesting but I don't know what the job prospects are in the UK with it, sorry!

I did one years ago, the Trinity isn't as well regarded as the Cambridge one.

I started out in tefl summer schools and then worked in language academies. I then moved abroad and got work in the international system but I do have a PGCE.

Tefl is fairly poorly paid and be careful which language schools you work for, there are some real rip off merchants out there.

On the positive side, it is very enjoyable and you meet some really interesting people.

I would imagine in the UK now, that there is quite a lot of EAL work but you may need the diploma for that.

I did the Cambridge one years ago and taught English overseas for many years as a result but I never found any ESL work in the UK despite living in an area with many ESL learners however as I don't speak Punjabi or Urdu, there are many more qualified teachers.
