It's for a post to be fully trained up for a practical/techy post where enthusiam, eye for detail and presentation are the only person specs on offer in the ad.

I'm not opposed to send in cv although it is currently geared to a different industry. I actually think my letter kind of covers it all, and may present better, as my relevant experience is from a fair few years ago and this would be a career change for me. I really want the job and would hate to mess up at the first hurdle!!

I would enclose a cv with a decent covering letter, unless there is obviously an applications form which needs to be filled in.

With a cv. In writing means not on the phone and that there probably isn't an application form. It may also mean no emails, depending on what contact details you have been given.
