Can I do freelance work whilst getting SMP from my employer?

I know there's been a similar thread recently, but my case is slightly different. My stingy employer only pays SMP (been working there 10 years...). Myself and DP are going to really struggling to survive when I leave to have the baby. Can I do occasional bits of freelance work while I am on leave?

You can if it's on a self-employed basis - ie you register as self-employed with HMRC, complete your own tax return and pay your own tax and NI.

You can't be employed by someone else and still get SMP.

You should also check your contract with your main employer to make sure you are allowed to work for someone else.
