how does the tax situation work?

So if for example I start a job in August, will I get a tax benefit because I didn't work from April through July? Does anyone know if I would get a tax rebate in August?

Thanks

Not an expert but I think that if you haven't been earning so far in this tax year you will be initially taxed as though you had earned the same amount of money for all the preceding months. You will then get a tax refund later in the year. You won't get a rebate when you haven't yet paid any tax as there is nothing to refund.

You'd either get a rebate just after next Apruil, or your tax code would be amended for the next tax year. So don't count on a big refund!
