I am applying for a job and need to supply contact details for references from previous employers. Do I need to contact them to ask if I can give their details first? I haven't worked with them for 18 months/2 years and haven't had any contact with them since leaving.

Thanks for your help
I'm popping out now and will check back later.

you might get a more detailed response if you call ahead, but they are obligated to supply factual refs (dates etc) either way

Thanks BB - that's really helpful

Depends who you will put. If you are going to name your old line managers and are hoping for a decent, detailed reference, then yes phone them pleasantly, catch up and talk about your request.

If you're just going to put HR and aren't bothered about a glowing detailed reference, then I wouldn't worry.

They are headteachers so I guess I should contact them first really. Thanks for your help
