Do I really *need* an iphone?

Ooops today I got a phonecall at 10 asking why I wasn't at a meeting. So had to leg it across town and was an hour late- very embarrasing! I have a diary which is mainly up to date but for some reason this particular appointment had gone from my brain (although it was in the diary I just hadn't registered the 12th was today!). I do have google calendar as well but never really get the two synced up properly so have mainly stuck to paper based diary. I do also use "remember the milk(RTM) " to help me with my to do lists. I also tried outlook calendar but that confuses me too much and at least with google calendar I can access it anywhere easily.

Anyhow I am debating getting myself an iphone so I can update my google calendar/rtm etc while out and about. DH has one and I love using his. My current phone is starting to die but I have a great deal (unlimited texts 600xnet anytime mins a month for £20 a month- trouble is the Iphone although you may get a similar deal comes in at £35 a month (for the deal I would need) and is an initial outlay of £200 (or £300 can't remember which). Debating whether it is worth the expense and whether it would make that much difference to my life to be worth the extra expense. (alternatively I hold on for another year or so until DH gets an updgrade and I get his old one!)

Any other freelancers/consultants with one? Does it make a difference?

If missing this appointment - or others - would have cost you money then I think you can justify getting one.

Not a freelancer - just a mum.

Look into the google android phone if you're a big google user. T-mobile or new one with vodafone I think.

MrsBoo · 12/05/2009 17:25

I didn't 'need' one - but now I hardly know what I did without it.
I was able to get a good deal with o2, and DH was upgrading to a Nokia something at the same time - but I love not needing to use a paper diary anymore, and its great for keeping on top of all the school type things, like afterschool activities, school trips, who needs lunch, when theyre getting out early etc etc.

Not a freelancer either but I have to say the iPhone calendar is bloody marvellous. I rely on it to a ridiculous degree - but it's also nice knowing that if I lose my phone the info is all up there in the ether as well.

I am freelancer with iPhone. Bought it after missing several vital emails in a row while out of office. They only £99 if you sign up for the 35 a month package. Diary is ok not best thing ever. I miss my filofax if I'm honest but this more compact and everything in one palmful. And of course it means you can sit on train and MN like I am!

orangina · 12/05/2009 17:48

Is the iPhone better than a blackberry then? I'm a freelancer and am fed up of constantly spending my time travelling places and not being able to catch up w emails etc.

iPhone or Blackberry?

Thandeka · 12/05/2009 18:23

I think iphone because the blackberry confuses me (DH's dad has one and I couldn't work out how to answer it!) and with the iphone you can download a spirit level app and that is just cool!

Hmmmm am very tempted- but then have just spent last hour updating my filofax- am rubbish at syncing between paper and electronic. I need to choose one or the other!

Oh no! Is it too late?

Sorry but I have heard so many bad things about the Iphone - it doesn't work with flash/java enabled website and you have to pay for useful little tools that other phones let you do for free! And you cannot forward texts!

DH has the Nokia N95 and it has excellent web browsing, he syncs it with his Google mail, calender and docs and uses it to organise everything. It is far more useful than the iphone IMO. I think there is probably an upgrade version of it now as he has had it a few months.

bramblebooks · 25/05/2009 17:52

I totally adore my iphone and use it constantly. It is fab for work and I have it synched up to mobile me, which means whenever I change anything on my pc, online diary or phone that it all gets changed and saved. I also have o2 bluebook which saves all my texts online for me.

There's a software upgrade over itunes in June which will allow many more features on the iphone.

PistachioLemon · 25/05/2009 18:00

Thandeka, I'm not following you round MN honest!

DH is in the same boat as you. Having had one, I suggested a Blackberry but he says he would prefer an iphone because it's 'trendier' and as he's in the design world he thinks it would be better .

To be honest, missing emails, calls or appointments potentially loses him work and therefore money so I think the cost of either is justified as long as it will keep him organised.

Thandeka · 25/05/2009 19:13

Not too late as realised hadnt changed my o2 account to my married name so decided to do that first. So haven't quite taken the plunge.

I do like nokia's so will have a look at the nokia 95 too- cheers for the tip!

And awwww PistachioLemon you mean I don't have a Mumsnet stalker after all I thought all the cool mumsnetters had one. I think your DH should get one and let me know how it is
