Term time kitchen job, would I get paid at all in the holidays ??

The job is in a school for 16.25 hours a week term time only. Pay rate is £6.31 an hour.

It doesn't say anything about a retainer during school holidays, so I am wondering if it is that your pay for term time is divided over the whole year.

Does anyone have any experience of term time work and know the answer ??

I know a few people who work in schools term-time only and they get their pay for term-time divided over the whole year. This means they get paid during the school holidays. I've asked them if they are happy with that and they said they love it as they have an income all year round and get great holidays too.

As a TA I got paid only term time - nothing for holidays and payment not spread throughout the year.

Whn I was a TA we got paid holidays and the payment was spread, you could always phone them up to see.

Would you be getting paid by the council? I work in a school and they pay every month, pro rata

I don't know tbh. Haven't been able to ring yet as only foud the ad on Sat morning.

If it was only term time pay then it would be no good because sorting my benefits out each time I didn't get paid would be more or less impossible.

If it is spread out over 12mths then thats fine and I will apply.

My aunt works in a kitcham in a bham school. Ill ask her for you- although im sure she doesnt get payed in the holidays- let me check.

Who's the employer - the council or an agency / contractor?

When I worked as a TA & midday meals supervisor some years back, I got holiday pay as the council was my employer, and they paid holidays. However the catering was contracted out, and the people actually working in the
kitchen didn't get holiday pay, which always struck me as very unfair.

So, basically it depends who your employer is, and what their rules are (UNLESS there's been a change in the law since I last worked in schools which is possible as it was a while ago).

I work term time for the council, and I get paid throughout the year.
However I have a contracted salary which is based on me doing a set number of hours per week.

All it says on the ad is that the catering service is managed in house.

They have to legally pay you holiday pay, find out if the £6.31 includes that or not. (I suspect not)

In theory, say if it is 38 weeks term time, you will get paid 16.25 hrs x £6.31 per hour x 38 weeks. Plus if the hourly rate is not including holiday pay, a pro rata holiday entitlement (approx 4 weeks) based on the legal yearly minimum. IE, you should get paid for approx 42 weeks of the year, which most schools divide by 12 monthly payments, so you dont say get to August and no pay when you dont work that particular month. However, some school contracts might include holiday working, plus a few additional holiday weeks working, which would up your overall weeks paid per year.
