Finding a job is a stressful time anyway but in the middle of a recession its awful. Its almost 4am and I can't sleep for worry. There are hardly any jobs out there. There are some completely unrelated to my field that I am over qualified for but surely if I go for it they witll KNOW I will leave as soon as I get a related job?

Am currently working my redundancy notice and each day I go in to work just seems one day closer to unemployment.

How awful for you Are your employers offering any form of assistance in finding another role? (I assume not). Can a recruitment agency or the Job Centre help at all?

Have you spotted any fixed term work that you might be overqualified for, maternity cover and the like? That way they wouldn't mind you were overqualified provided you would commit to the fixed period of a year or so.

I will say that recruiting during a recession is tricky for exactly the reason you give. I've been interviewing people who've been running their own businesses and thinking "the last thing you really want is to become a small cog in a very large machine" - but some of it depends on the personality type; if I get two good years of work out of that person and then they leave / go back to contracting / whatever when the market picks up, that's probably a fair deal.

Thanks. Maternity cover is a good idea will have a look. Employers are hiding from the whole thing - they told me 2 weeks ago a MIGHT be getting made redundant and then last week they suddenly started talking about it as if it was definite. (I knew it always was definite and they just didnt want to say) Off to the library this morning to photocopy stuff and get it sent off. I just want to be able to DO something - like apply for a job - but there are no jobs to apply for! Am with 3 agencies and they are lovely but sadly work is slow coming in.
