I've got an interview to be a magistrate in about 10 days time. Has anyone been through this who can let me know what to expect? Any tips or advice?

They just want to know what sort of person you are in the first interview. I would (and did!) do the following things (oh, I've been a magistrate for a year now so whole interview stuff wasn't that long ago)

  • make sure you have been to court to observ. a few times, make note of anything interesting you saw and be prepared to talk about it
  • see if there is anything interesting/controversial in the magistracy in the newspapers the last few weeks
  • look at this website (if you haven't already) here and here

If you haven't addressed all the personal qualities in your application form be ready with examples of them if they should ask.

The interview is fine, they aren't trying to trick you but they will want to know what sort of person you are and if you will stand your ground if necessary (this is dealt with more in 2nd interview). I know this sounds a bit scary lol! but it's fine. I hadn't had an interview for YEARS before I had mine and it wasn't half as bad as I was expecting! Alot of people go in totally unprepared so if you have done your observations and read around a bit on those sites you will be ahead already. Good luck.
