Help with sick pay and cancer

Dh has been off work for 4 weeks now since being told he has leukemia, as have i.
Now he rang his HR department and they told him he will get 3 months full pay, and after that will be up to managers decision. He is hoping to get back to work at the end of the month all going well. He rang his boss and explained he would be returning but would need a stagger start. So starting with just mornings, then going till 3pm and finally till 5pm. HIs boss has now said this is going to be difficult. He has asked DH to look into what benifits we would get if he is paid ssp!! and also compained that he doesnt want the rest of the team to be worried about approaching DH if they have a cold and such and should he maybe wear a mask at work!
Im very confused as it was HR that suggested staggered start. The chemo makes him tired and of course has to aviod infections, but simple things like washing hands, not coughing over him, not kissing him would be enough.
Can his boss suddenly change his pay from full pay to ssp? Help, money worries are hard enough at the moment without this on top.

if the 3 months sick pay is in his contract, then don't see how manager's views can affect it. if DH gets back on to HR then hopefully HR can stop manager being a twat.

I will look at his contract, it just made me so mad, when his managered asked him to look inot what benifits we would get on SSP?? Does he really think it would make up what DH earns? And he knows i work too, so I know we wouldnt get anything, and if we did it would be a wait anyways.
I know they are really struggling in the office without him and he has been doing some work for them at home too, so very unfair imo

His boss probably has no expereince of dealing with a situation like this and has vomited all this rubbish through nerves and idiocy.

Speak to HR and explain exactly what your dh needs or/and also ask for any suggestions that she can make to help you through the situation.

Explain calmly that you are sure that his manager meant well but that perhaps she could have a word with dh's manager to coach him through dealing with a situation like this without further upset or mishap.
Your DH needs a return to work plan.

HR should have already done this and also spoken to your dh's team to allay their fears and concerns over his health and return to work.
IME people were frightened of making me ill, tired out and just had no idea how to speak to me.

please get in touch with macmillan cancer support. they have lots of experience of stuff like this and hopefully can help out with boss, HR and returns to work. If DH is in a union / professional organisation talk to them and see what support they can offer. Think if there is a hr dept that a meeting with hr boss and DH (if he fit) would be beneficial.

to be honest I know they have told us to get as back to us normal as possible as he will be living with this forever, but i do worry about him going back. We all know someone in every team comes in even on their death bed!
