I am thinking of completing some book keeping training. I have had a look at the institute of certified book keepers website and plan on studying myself at home for the level 1 certificate in basic book keeping as I have no experience. I don't want to spend a fortune so was going to just use the book they suggest and then take the exam at home myself. Has anyone done this and how did it work? Would I be better off doing a course and if so which one (it would have to be at home as I can't commit to a college course).

If it goes well I am considering whether there would be a possibility for me to be self employed as a book keeper. Does anyone do this and could you give me some idea of what you would earn (if that's not too cheeky!)

Thanks

I'm interested in this too, anyone know the difference between the Institute of Certified Bookkeepers and the International Association of Bookkeepers ? Is one more respected than the other, are either exempted from further courses e.g AAT foundation ?
