popsy, have you checked out the TES staffroom?

Could be some good advice on there.

popsycal · 19/04/2005 15:18

I'd have thought they'd do their level best to keep a good teacher, especially if you're request is only to drop 1 day a week.

What's been said so far that makes you think its a non no?

bundle · 19/04/2005 15:22

go in armed with other successful models within/outside the school. i certainly work more efficiently now i work 3 days a week (doing same job) and have been able to occasionally work flexibly the other way too, in changing my days to suit my boss's needs. 28% of my dept now work flexibly, so it's obviously welcomed here!

popsycal · 19/04/2005 15:25

they are just a bit old fashioned tbh
i am also a head of year six which is a complicsting factor,,,,bu t the girl who is covering my head og year role at the minute would jump at the chance of doing it one day a week....

the head said he does value me being there and is looking forward to me returning but wil have to convince the governors that the childre will not suffer
tbh they wil suffer more if i am there full time

might help you to put case from yr head's/governors' point of view - ie business case FOR you doing this for them - giving other colleague chance to act up in senior role, your greater commitment, energy, length of stay etc due to having better worklife balance
DTI website is useful - got advice and model application form to download
www.dti.gov.uk/er/flexible.htm

PuffTheMagicDragon · 19/04/2005 15:31

Well, it sounds good that there's someone willing to take on the role on the day you are not around - good staff development I'd have thought - that's definitely a positive.

popsycal · 19/04/2005 15:31

thanks msschef for that link

popsycal · 22/04/2005 19:13

slight compromise reached and sidways move but good new challenge...governors should gree no prob

OP posts:
roisin · 22/04/2005 20:31

So they've agreed to the 4 days? That's brilliant!

(Did ds2 behave?)

roisin · 22/04/2005 20:32

How many weeks do you have to do when you go back this term before summer?

popsycal · 22/04/2005 21:31

ok ds2 still on my lap and the lightbulb in the room has gone so dreadful typing.

ok so...it went well. he had got himself up to speed on the legislation etc so he knew the ins and outs...

lots of stuff has been going on since i have been away,,,,lots of staff politics, fallouts, huffs, tantrums (staff not kids)
anyway - a lot of what he sais could be seen as buttering my up if i were being cynical but i thikn he was very genuine and open....he said that he really wants t keep me there(and once kids are at school encourage me to apply for depoty headships etc so he wants to keep m there

because of the staff problems they are doing spme shuffling anyway....top and bottom of it is///he is going to suggest to the givernors that i do 4 days but as head of year 5 (currebtky year 6) and teach mainly year 5 with some year 6. this takes pressure of sats away for a while as i am usually heavily involved in organisation as well as teaching/ taught year 5 for 3 years when i first strted three so am familiar with it all. we are getting an extension and a new year 5 area. happy for me to do 4 days i that role. wantrs to intriduce systen wher head if year 5 follows year group to year 5 so u could ve back there next year

also we are a middle school so will have big links with frst schools and lots of liaison to do etc.....different skills etc which will be interesting

wants ne to help develop core subjects in year 5 to bring it more inline with year 6 teaching and to improve disipline,,,,

actually i am quiye excited about it which is bizarre as i was dreading going back!

paid maternity ends 3 weeks before summer but def raking two more weeks off...may go back for last week but may go back on first day of hols wgucj u have just discivered i can do

givernors meeting on thurs but i would be very sirprised if they disagree

in the end it seeme d that i was doing him a favour as he never thought i woukd agree lol

so
looks good - and thanks fir asking and being interested
shocking typing sorry
