Calling all proofreaders...

Can I ask your opinion? I am about to sign up for a proofreading course at the London College of Communication. Does anyone know if this course is any good and also, how hard is it to get work? Is there an agency you can sign up to or is it a matter of cold calling your services. I used to be a sub editor (pre-children) but I no longer have any contacts as that was ages ago.

Heeoo LW am looking into this at the mo as well. There are proofreading agencies out there (do a google) but not sure if they are accepting new proofreaders (may just be one-man outfits pretending to be bigger). www.sfep.org.uk may help.

sfep are excellent and run their own training courses which are very good value. London college is also very well-regarded. I work as a freelance editor/proof-reader and have no formal training but more than ten years' experience.

If you already have experience as a sub-editor, I think I'd be concentrating on findng contracts rather than training. Again , the SFEP has lots of ideas on how to turn freelance.
