When do I have to let work know?

I'm currently on mternity leave from my job (only getting SMP though) and am due to go back in July this year but not going to.

When do I have to let them know? Do you think I could do it over the phone?

I think you have to write and hand in your notice , obviously allowing at least that notice period before you are due to return.

You need to hand your notice in in the normal way, so if your contract says you need to give one month's written notice, that's what you need to do.

Ringing your manager to let him/her know might be an idea, but then confirm it in writing as well.
