Freelance Typing - how much do you charge?

My mum's friend has asked me to type up her family history from an audio tape and I don't really know how much to charge, does anyone know what the going rate for that kind of thing would be?

I've done a search already but it didn't give me any numbers. It did make me scared though, lots of talk of how it can be very hard work [scared emoticon!].

Hi CCC

check out the freelance transcription thread a few inches down. It appears that rates vary from £20-£50, depending on how many people are talking and how specialised the vocab is.

I'd say it depends where you live. Rates in London will be higher than the rest of the country. I used to do secretarial temp work and that paid about £7-8 an hour but that was about 10 years ago so it's probably more like £12-15 now. I'd say £20 - £50 would be pushing it.

Why don't you contact a couple of temp agencies and pretend you're looking for work so you can find out their rates, then add on 15% which is what they usually charge their clients on top of the hourly rate they pay the temp. I hope that helps.

Hi there,
It can be hard work! Depends on the quality of the recording, but for example £0.50 per rec. minute would earn you £30 per rec hour, which usually takes around 4 hours if it's a nice recording (if!!!).
Good luck!
