Any self-employed make up artists?

Hi, I am a single mum and I am still thinking about what kind of career I should choose. I have an interest in make up and think that being a self employed make up artist would bring me real satisfaction and would work around my child too.Any make up artists out there?

Hi Im not a make up artist but Virgin Vie and Body shop at home could be the flexible solution - cos they will train you and give you the products to work with.

I dont work for either of these companies btw but have a friend who is a SAHM who works for body shop and loves it.

I think it depends on what type of work you are looking for, eg to work on fashion shows, film, TV, etc, or to work on wedding makeup, private work, etc. A friend of mine trained in makeup, and quickly built up a freelance client list, however most of the work she did was for TV and fashion shows. The work was very demanding, unsocial, and sporadic - eg some weeks she would work every day solidly, then others not much at all, would have to be the studios for TV work at about 5am, etc. She stopped before she had kids, as she said it would have been impossible to looK after a baby and do this sort of work, so in this sector it's clearly not something you could fit around your kids, rather the other way around. However if you did local wedding or party makeup, then it could probably work.
Good luck!
