How are you managing occasional/sporadic childcare needs (e.g. to cover occasional meetings)?

I can't yet justify a regular commitment to a nursery and can't find creches locally that are bookable by the hour (apart from at the gym!).

Is imposing on friends and family the only option?

Yes - for me. I have a very obliging mother-in-law. Or Cbeebies and the promise of crumpets for occasional phone meetings.

Family Information Services have just called to say some childminders offer emergency cover and can be more flexible. Will investigate.
