I would quite like to work in a library.
Do I need special training?

Try cilip.org.uk - they should be able to offer some advice plus they have a recruitment side called Infomatch. Good luck

I worked as a Library Assistant for a few years - which needs no special qualifications. Obviously this means the pay's not as good as a qualified librarian's, but you can learn on the job & then decide if you want to take it further.

I eventually decided to train to be a librarian - for which you do need qualifications.

Then I got sidetracked into another job entirely, but that's not relevant here!

Competition for jobs is really intense, so much so that qualified librarians will take on library assistant posts which are, by and large, very poorly paid. You don't actually need any qualifications to become a library assistant in theory, but in practice you might find it more difficult than that.

If you decide to qualify as a librarian, various places do distance learning courses etc. You can also take an HNC/D in information and library studies, which technically qualifies you to work as a library assistant, but I don't know anybody who actually has one, and I've been working in libraries for upwards of 15 years!

Library assistants don't need particular qualifications to get a job, though usually a minimum of 5 GCSEs are stipulated - but they are poorly paid. Librarians have to do a degree and/or postgraduate qualification and many are also chartered members of CILIP.
Don't forget that most librarians have to work some unsocial hours on a rota - unless they work for a corporate library.
