Advice needed on giving a period of notice

Please can someone advise me! I am self-employed but based in one particular school providing tuition. I really like the school but have been offered a better paid permanent job elsewhere. I intend to take the full-time job. What notice do I have to give? I have no contract and am not staff.

Why don't you suggest a time-frame that works for you and see what they say?

I suggested that I leave at half term ( a month.) The deputy seemed to think that this wasn't enough notice and that I would need to give half a term (like the staff.) However I am not staff and have no contract. At the same time I don't want to burn bridges. New job want me after half term.

A month seems fair to me. There are not many industries I know of where more than 3 weeks or a month is required.
Sounds like you need to be firm but polite to minimise bridge-burning without risking the new job.

Thanks bubbaluv. I really do enjoy working at the place where I am self-employed but unfortunately the credit crunch is biting hard!
