childcare problems where do i stand??

ds and dd go to a childminder - her husband has been rushed to hospital and is quite ill and she has told me she can't have the kids for me. For the last 2 days i haven't been to work but i need to sort out next week (i only do 2 days)

do work have to give me the time off if it is a childcare problem or can i get into trouble?

I'm going to try to sort afternoons out with mil (she works mornings) but it still might be difficult and i just din't know where i stand

Your childcare arrangements aren't your employers concern, however you can have emergency leave for dependents, which would be for a day or two to sort out alternative arrangements and is unpaid. Something like this would count as an emergency.

So they do have to give you a day or two unpaid in this type of situation, yes. Have you any reason to think they won't be more generous though? Allow you to take some annual leave or something? That's the legal position but many employers try to be more accommodating if they can. Have you asked?

Not entitled to pay but it should go on your record as authorised absence. I'd call work asap though and let them that you are having trouble if you have not already done so.

Work are normally pretty flexible and will try and help as long as they don't feel you are taking the piss

Here about emergency dependents' leave. It's not for the time it takes to find an alternative solution, it's for a reasonable time on an emergency basis - you will see the link gives the guideline of a day or two.

Providing you let your employer know that is the leave you are taking, that's what will be recorded. But if you've already taken two days off that will probably be it for the emergency leave, if you want more time it will have to be at your employer's discretion or annual leave or something.

finding another cm round here is going to be hard - i plan to have a chat with some of them at the school (tis quite a small school so a lot of cm don't drop/collect from there) Hopefully mil will be able to help too - i'm just worrying about it all - cm, her hubby and the childcare gggggrrrrr

I know what I mean but am confusing myself LOL

i have offered to do my hours whenever i can fit them in - ie evenings, afternoons and weekends but it's just in case i can't slot the kids in with mil and fil and their works etc
